Cookie Projects: Snowman

 
Bake a batch of cookies using one of our recipes or your own. For every two dozen snowman cookies, make a batch of frosting using one of our frosting recipes.

Color 3 tablespoons of the frosting red. Divide remaining frosting in half and color half of it white using Bright White food coloring; set aside. Divide remaining frosting in half again and color one half black and one half light blue. To make a nice pastel blue, use a drop of Royal Blue coloring and several drops of Bright White.

Prepare four disposable bags by inserting two #2 tips, a #3 tip, and a #4 tip. Fill one #2 tip bag with black and one #2 tip bag with red. Fill the #3 tip bag with about 3 tablespoons of the white frosting, and fill the #4 tip bag with the light blue frosting. Secure all with rubber bands.

Turn remaining white frosting into glaze by adding water a few drops at a time, until it is a thin consistency. A few drops of glaze should disappear into the mass by the count of 6 or 7.




Glaze body and head of snowman cookies white. Scoop glaze onto cookie with a spatula. Spread toward edges, adding more as needed, and scraping off any excess. Allow to dry for several hours.




Using the shape of the cookie (and this photo) as a guide, outline the hat, hatband, and scarf with black frosting. Leave room on each end of the scarf for fringe, which will be added later.




Pipe the face. Start with two eyes, just under the hat brim, and a small circle for the nose. Create a mouth by drawing two short lines on either side of the face for cheeks, then connect them to make a smile.




Finish outlining the head, body, and arms of the snowman. Add three small circles down the middle of the body for buttons.




Fill in the hat with black frosting, leaving the hatband unfilled. With red frosting, fill in the nose and buttons.




Fill in hatband and scarf with blue frosting. Then add fringe to the ends of the scarf by pulling short strands of blue frosting away from the black border.




Use tweezers to position snowflake accents onto scarf. If frosting is still fairly fresh you can lightly press them onto the scarf. If the frosting has dried too much, use little beads of blue frosting to "glue" them on.




Add black dots to the buttons to make button holes. Finish by adding white snow to the top and brim of hat.
